The agreements govern the exclusive purchase of all the electricity generated from the Perth Wave Energy Project and the connection of the wave project into the local electrical infrastructure of HMAS Stirling, which is Australia’s largest naval facility.

The agreements were unveiled by Prime Minister Julia Gillard and Federal Member for Brand Gary Gray at Carnegie’s wave energy research facility in Fremantle, Western Australia.

“It is significant, in light of current efforts by international navies to increase their renewable energy mix such as the United States Navy, for the Australian Department of Defence and Royal Australian Navy to be supporting the development of emerging clean technologies like Carnegie’s CETO wave energy technology through the purchase of electricity,” said Carnegie Managing Director and Chief Executive Michael Ottaviano.

Carnegie said it is now focussed on progressing detailed design of the project, and is targeting construction and first power to the grid at the end of 2013.
