The $2 million previously spent annually by the City of Sydney on GreenPower will now be reinvested into renewable energy systems for its own buildings and operations.

Future solar projects under consideration include a glass and solar panel shade canopy in front of Customs House at Circular Quay and solar panel roofs on other council buildings such as depots, aquatic centres and other community facilities.

Lord Mayor of Sydney Clover Moore MP said “Rather than just offsetting our electricity emissions, this strategy invests the money we would have spent on carbon offsets into building renewable energy projects for the city.”

“While GreenPower has served the City well,” Ms Moore said, “we can now achieve more through smarter investment in renewable energy generation.”

The announcement follows recently unveiled City of Sydney plans to meet 70 per cent of the city's energy needs using power from multiple trigeneration plants by 2030.

Under the GreenPower accreditation program, consumers pay an additional fee to their energy provider that is invested back into the renewable energy sector.
