Moreton Bay Regional Council has embarked upon a $3 million project to capture methane gas emissions from landfill sites at Bunya, Caboolture and Dakabin in Southeast Queensland.
Construction is already underway at the sites, where flare gas recovery systems will be one of the prime methods of extraction.
Once constructed, the facilities will be trialled for six months to determine the quantity of methane gas. The council’s commercial enterprises spokesperson councillor Brian Battersby said that once this quantity was determined, the systems could be used to produce electricity onsite.
The project exists as part of wider goal of the Moreton Bay Regional Council to cut up to 2.5 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions from major landfill sites by 2030.
