Sydney’s Bronte surf life saving club, has gone solar after the official unveiling of a donated solar Photovoltaic (PV) power system by the Federal Minister for the Environment and Water Resources the Hon Malcolm Turnbull.

The solar system was donated by the Australian solar PV power industry to recognise 2007 The Year of the Surf Life Saver and acknowledge the significant community support that solar power enjoys.

Bronte SLSC is an iconic club – it is the oldest surf club in the world, and the donation made is an appropriate tribute to Australia’s surf life saving community, which celebrates its centenary this year.

Community members were encouraged to visit Bronte, learn more about solar energy and how to take advantage it in order to alleviate the need for coal fired power.

The unveiling of the installation to the community in August was particularly timely, given the recent $275 million increase in funding from the Federal Government for people wanting to put solar PV power on their roof – providing a significant boost to families wishing to contribute to the fight against climate change.

Current estimations suggest that for every air-conditioner installed in NSW, the electricity industry needs to invest an extra $13,000 on more poles and wires just to manage the load.

Solar PV power is a cleaner, smarter alternative as the systems produce no greenhouse gas emissions and the electricity is generated on-site - where it is needed - so there is no need for expensive poles, wires or substations.

The solar industry as a whole used the unveiling as an opportunity to both thank the community for its support of solar energy and recognise the fact that it is initiatives such as the Australian Government’s PV Rebate Program which assist the solar PV power industry to reach its potential.
